Have you ever had a cheese craving and raided the fridge late a night filling your face with slice after slice? Or perhaps opening a bag of shredded cheddar, taking handful after handful leading right to your mouth??
I am certainly guilty of eating cheese straight out of the package. Fortunately I was able to curb my cravings over a year ago and now those binging days are over. I don’t miss that lingering taste that brought me back for more. Although occasionally I do have those days where I remember how good eating all that cheese was. Just the other day I was pushing my cart past the cheese section and briefly thought of purchasing some delicious Alpine Lace Swiss, once of my past favorites! I am always able to contain myself, but it makes me think…. will my past cheese addiction always be there?
It probably will and I am ok with that. I still eat small amounts here and there as I know that my body doesn’t do well with large amounts of cheese. I am lactose intolerant which helps me remember the stomach aches I used to get. Cheese also makes me feel ‘clogged up’ as it is a mucus producing food. Too much dairy is like sludge in my joints and sinuses. Ever get congested after a cheese binge? Think for a minute. I never used to realize it until I became aware.
Anyway, back to why cheese is so addicting. The short answer is that cheese contains opiates aka. morphine which makes you come back for more. **Drools** Ok I am not really drooling. I am not even craving cheese! Are you? Too much cheese is really not good for you, but I know how much you love it. I gave up cheese completely for a while and dropped 5 lbs very quickly. Not that I needed to, but that’s what happened. I have since put that weight back on through exercise. If you are trying to lose weight would you try giving up cheese?
Here is a really interesting (and kinda funny) article on the addictiveness of cheese. If you think you might have a cheese addiction the article will help you with ways and reasons to cut back.
