All about Avocados

Today’s post is brought to you by the Australian avocado, since of course, I am in Australia! I arrived here 12 days ago not knowing where the avocados here came from. Back at home in the states they either come from California or Mexico. And that’s a far distance to travel back to Connecticut! So I sought out to see how far my Aussie Avo had traveled.

It was quite easy as I went to the produce shop and right there on the sign it said “Grown in Australia.” Just as I suspected as the climate in most parts of the country are fairly temperate, which means good growing conditions for avocados. But where in Australia are they grown? The country is almost as big as the lower 48 states. I found out they grow all over, As you can see from Figure 1 they are even local to where I am staying. Whoo hoo I get to eat locally grown avocados for 3 weeks! I feel it is important to eat locally grown food as much as possible, we’ll get into the reasons why in another post.

Why I love avocados.

# 1: Avocados are great for the vegetarian diet. For me they helped provide an easy transition from meat eating as they are quite satisfying.

# 2: Avocados are great for your insides. Some even call it a nutritional superf0od. Packed full of goodness they are rich in vitamin C & K, help maintain weight, help lower cholesterol, a powerful antioxidant and helps protect your liver. Got to keep a healthy body!

#3: A true beauty food. Filled with Vitamin E which we all know is great for our skin. They also contain Lutein, polyphenols, Oleic Acid, Glutamine and Folic Acid, all beauty enhancers! Did you know you can put avocado in your hair to condition it and add shine? Now you know what to do with the over-ripe avocado you forgot to eat.

#4: Anything you can put cheese on you can use an avocado instead. So much better for you too! And more delicious in my opinion. Use this nutrition tip to cut your dairy intake and contribute to a healthier lifestyle.

One of my favorite breakfast treats is an organic egg on toast with avocado and tomato. Yum! I actual had one this morning.

I try and eat 1/2 to 1 avocado per day. It’s easy since you can add one to almost any meal.  I am craving one right now…
